FEATURED: Innovations on the Livestock Methane Challenge at Climate Week NYC 2024

During Climate Week NYC , one of the largest global events focused on climate action, held in September 2024, the Global Dairy Platform (GDP) and the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) hosted the event "Livestock: Facing the Methane Challenge." This meeting brought together representatives from various organizations to discuss innovations aimed at reducing methane emissions from livestock.

Climate Week NYC 2024

Participating Entities:

- Global Dairy Platform (GDP): Organization that brings together leaders in the global dairy sector to promote sustainable and nutritional practices in dairy production.

- Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB): International coalition dedicated to promoting sustainability in the beef value chain, setting targets and sharing best practices.

- Pathways to Dairy Net Zero: Initiative that aims to accelerate climate action in the dairy sector, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.

Main Discussions and Innovations Presented:

1. Vaccine Development to Reduce Emissions: ArkeaBio , an agricultural biotechnology company, is developing a vaccine for cattle that aims to reduce methane emissions. This practical solution is designed to be easily administered on farms of different sizes, integrating with existing agricultural practices.

2. Feed Additives for Methane Reduction: dsm-firmenich , a global science and innovation company, has developed Bovaer, a feed additive that, when incorporated into livestock diets, can significantly reduce enteric methane emissions. This innovation contributes to reducing the environmental footprint of meat and dairy production.

3. Incentives for Sustainable Practices: FrieslandCampina , a European dairy cooperative, has implemented a system of financial incentives for producers who adopt sustainable practices. This approach promotes emissions reductions and improved production efficiency among its members.

4. Sustainability Points System: Arla Foods , an international dairy cooperative, uses a points system to determine financial incentives for farmers based on sustainable practices. The more points a producer accumulates, the higher the remuneration for the milk supplied, encouraging the adoption of methods that reduce emissions and promote sustainability.

General Observations of the Meeting:

Participants highlighted that livestock farming offers significant opportunities for climate change mitigation. Implementing innovative practices not only reduces methane emissions but also improves the sector's production efficiency and economic sustainability. Collaboration among different stakeholders is crucial to achieving ambitious environmental goals and promoting a more sustainable future for the global livestock industry.

Importance of Innovation and Collaboration:

Participants emphasized that innovation is crucial to continued environmental progress in the livestock sector. Collaboration between companies, organizations, and producers is essential to implementing effective and scalable solutions that address current climate challenges.

This event highlighted the livestock sector's commitment to addressing the challenges of climate change through innovations and sustainable practices, aligning with global goals of emission reduction and environmental sustainability.
