The system follows the life cycle approach, the guidelines of IDF (International Dairy Federation) Bulletin 520/2022 and employs procedures compatible with ISO 14040, 14044 and 14067 standards.

The indicator used (functional unit) is Kg of CO2Eq/kg of milk produced (corrected to 4.0% fat and 3.3% protein - FPCM), informing the carbon footprint related to the production of 1 kg of FPCM (functional unit).

This indicator represents the total greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O), corrected for carbon equivalents according to their global warming potential, using AR6 (IPCC Sixth Assessment Report for GHG GWP) as a reference calculation.

The carbon footprint of milk production refers to the total amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with milk production, including emissions from system management plus emissions from inputs used. Emissions associated with transportation to the dairy, industrialization, bottling, and marketing processes are not included in the footprint calculation. We use a renowned database to obtain data used in the construction of the life cycle inventory.

The platform is available at peccalc.com.br. To access, you'll need a username and password, which are provided by the ESG Pec team.

The system works online; to fill in the information and perform the calculations, you must be connected to the internet.

But don't worry, if you're sending information to perform calculations and the internet goes down, the system saves the data at the point you were at and you can resume filling it out where you left off, without losing anything.

The platform can be used on both computers and mobile phones.

The impacts and deductions related to the biogas production process are included in the calculation in the Waste Management (anaerobic digestion) step. It is important that the amount of energy generated in this way is not included in the energy value entered in the "Grid (kWh/year)" field in step 5 of the form (Fuels and Energy). This means that the use of energy produced from biogas will not be counted, representing avoided emissions in the calculation.

The carbon footprint reduction impact is due to reduced grid energy consumption. For the software to calculate the carbon footprint correctly, it's important to exclude the amount of energy generated (photovoltaic) from the total kWh reported in the "Grid (KWh/year)" field in step 5 of the form (Fuels and Energy). This way, the amount won't be counted in the energy portion of the carbon footprint and will be considered avoided emissions.
